Why AI automation projects need a rollback plan

Launch plans for a new automation almost always cover the happy path in detail: what triggers it, what it does, how success gets measured. They rarely cover, with the same rigor, what happens if it needs to be shut off quickly, and that gap becomes a real problem the first time an automation starts doing something wrong at scale.

The specific risk with AI-driven automations is that failures aren't always obvious the way a crashed script is obvious. A workflow using a model to classify or draft content can keep running, producing plausible-looking but wrong output, for hours before anyone notices, because nothing about the system looks broken from the outside.

A real rollback plan answers three questions before launch, not after an incident: how does someone stop this immediately without needing the original builder available, what happens to in-flight actions that were mid-process when it's stopped, and how does the team identify what damage, if any, was done before the stop happened.

This is thirty minutes of planning that most automation launches skip because it feels like planning for failure rather than planning for success. The teams that do it are the ones who can say, calmly, "we turned it off in four minutes" instead of describing a slow, improvised scramble while a broken workflow keeps running.
