The AI literacy gap between leadership and the team actually using the tools
Leadership's understanding of AI capability is often shaped by demos, conference talks, and vendor pitches, all of which show the technology at its best, under ideal conditions, with a curated example. The team actually using these tools daily has a very different, more textured understanding shaped by the tool's real failure rate on the business's actual messy data.
This gap produces a specific, recurring friction: leadership sets expectations or timelines based on the demo-level capability they've seen, and the implementation team is working against a reality that includes edge cases, data quality issues, and integration friction the demo never had to deal with, and the resulting timeline mismatch gets read as the team underperforming rather than as a calibration problem.
Closing the gap isn't about leadership needing to become technical. It's about creating a direct channel where the team actually using the tools reports real performance, including the messy parts, to the people setting expectations, rather than that reality getting filtered through several layers of optimistic status updates on its way up.
The projects that stay realistically scoped are the ones where leadership has seen the tool fail on the business's actual data at least once, not just succeed on a vendor's polished demo. That single exposure recalibrates expectations more effectively than any status report describing the gap in the abstract.
