Featured snippets: still worth optimizing for?

Featured snippets, the highlighted answer box that used to sit above traditional results, earned a reputation as valuable real estate worth deliberately structuring content to win, and the search results page has changed enough with the rise of AI-generated answer summaries that the value calculation deserves a second look rather than assuming the old advice still applies unchanged.

The core tension: a featured snippet used to be one of the few ways to get a fully-formed answer directly in the search results, which sometimes reduced click-through since some users got their answer without clicking, and now competes directly with an AI overview doing largely the same job, often with more comprehensive synthesis, meaning the traffic value of winning a traditional snippet has likely declined even where the snippet itself still appears.

What's still genuinely worth optimizing for: structuring content with clear, direct answers to specific questions near the top of a page, using proper heading hierarchy, still helps content get pulled into whatever answer format currently exists, snippet or AI overview, and that structural clarity also genuinely helps human readers, which is value independent of whichever specific search feature happens to be surfacing it this year.

The practical shift isn't to stop structuring content for direct answers, it's to stop treating a featured snippet specifically as the primary goal, and instead treat clear, well-structured, directly-answering content as the goal, recognizing it may get surfaced through a snippet, an AI overview, or neither, depending on how the results page happens to be composed for that specific query today.
