The frequency cap myth: when repetition still works

"Ad fatigue" is a real phenomenon and a real reason performance declines over time, and it's also become a reflexive explanation applied to almost any performance dip, leading accounts to cap frequency more aggressively than the data actually supports.

The distinction that matters: fatigue shows up as declining click-through and conversion rate on the same creative shown to the same audience repeatedly. A frequency increase that coincides with a broader audience expansion, a seasonal demand shift, or a competitor's own campaign isn't fatigue, and capping frequency in response doesn't fix a problem that was never about repetition.

For consideration and lower-funnel audiences specifically, moderate repetition often still converts well past the frequency where a marketer's gut says to worry, five to seven exposures before a purchase decision is common in categories with any real consideration cycle, and capping too early just means the seventh impression, the one that would have converted, never gets delivered.

The right response to a performance dip isn't a reflexive frequency cap. It's checking whether creative-level metrics for that specific ad are actually declining before concluding fatigue is the cause at all.
