International SEO: hreflang without the headache
Hreflang tags, which tell search engines which language and regional version of a page to show to which searchers, have a well-earned reputation for being fragile and easy to implement incorrectly, and most of that fragility traces back to a small number of specific, well-documented mistakes rather than to the underlying concept being genuinely difficult.
The most common mistake is a missing reciprocal link: hreflang requires every page in a set of regional variants to link to every other variant, including itself, and a single missing reciprocal link anywhere in the set can cause search engines to disregard the entire hreflang cluster for that group of pages, silently, with no error message anywhere to flag the problem.
The second common mistake is inconsistent URLs: an hreflang tag pointing to a URL that redirects, has a different canonical tag than the one specified, or uses a slightly different URL format than the actual live page, any of which breaks the relationship the tag was trying to establish, again silently.
The practical fix for most sites isn't manually maintaining hreflang tags at all, it's using a plugin, CMS feature, or build-time script that generates the full reciprocal set automatically whenever a page is added or changed, removing the manual maintenance step that's the actual source of nearly every hreflang problem worth worrying about.
