The keyword research mistake that wastes a content budget

Keyword research tools make search volume the most visible number on the screen, so it's the number most content plans get built around. It's also, on its own, a poor predictor of whether content targeting that keyword will ever rank or convert.

The mistake compounds when volume gets chased without checking who currently occupies page one: a high-volume keyword dominated by ten sites with decades of domain authority is a much worse bet than a lower-volume keyword where the current top results are thin, outdated, or simply not very good.

The corrected process weighs three things together, not volume alone: search intent, meaning does the keyword actually match what the business sells, ranking difficulty realistic for the site's current authority, and commercial value, since a lower-volume keyword close to a purchase decision often converts better than a high-volume, top-of-funnel one.

A content calendar built around volume alone tends to produce a lot of published articles and very little pipeline. A content calendar built around winnable, commercially relevant keywords produces fewer articles and, consistently, more revenue per article published.
