Why page experience signals matter more for some queries than others

Page experience signals, Core Web Vitals chief among them, get discussed in SEO guidance as a universal ranking factor with roughly consistent importance across every query, and the actual evidence suggests their practical weight varies meaningfully depending on how competitive and how commercially intentioned the query is.

For a highly competitive commercial query where many pages already have strong, comparable content quality and relevance, page experience becomes a more meaningful tiebreaker, because it's one of the few remaining differentiators between pages that are otherwise similarly well-optimized for the actual content and intent match.

For a long-tail, low-competition query where few pages are even trying to rank well, content relevance and quality dominate so heavily that a slow but genuinely well-matched page will usually still outrank a fast but poorly matched one, meaning the page experience investment matters less there, at least for ranking purposes specifically, separate from its clear value for user experience and conversion.

This doesn't argue against investing in page experience broadly, it's valuable for conversion and user experience regardless of its ranking weight. It argues for prioritizing that investment on the pages competing in genuinely crowded, competitive query spaces, where it's more likely to be the actual differentiator, rather than treating it as a uniformly weighted factor everywhere.
