Programmatic SEO: when it works and when it's just spam at scale
Programmatic SEO, generating a page for every city, every product variant, every combination a template can support, has produced some of the biggest organic growth stories of the last few years, and it's also produced an enormous amount of thin, low-value pages that Google's updates have been increasingly effective at identifying and suppressing.
The distinction that separates the two isn't technical, it's substantive: does each generated page actually contain unique, useful information for that specific variant, or is it the same three sentences with a city name swapped in. A thousand pages that differ only in a find-and-replace variable are exactly the pattern recent quality updates were built to catch.
The programmatic strategies still working reliably pull in genuinely differentiated data per page, real local pricing, real availability, real location-specific detail, rather than templated boilerplate, and treat the template as a starting structure for real content rather than a substitute for it.
Programmatic SEO isn't dead, but the version that worked in 2019, thin pages, sheer volume, minimal differentiation, increasingly isn't a growth strategy anymore. It's a bet against Google's next quality update, and that bet has been losing more often than it wins.
