When 'we already have ChatGPT' is the wrong objection to an AI project

"We already have ChatGPT, why do we need this" is one of the most common objections I hear pitching a specific AI-powered workflow, and it's usually based on a real but mistaken assumption: that a general-purpose chat interface and a purpose-built system solve the same problem just because both involve a language model somewhere.

The actual difference is integration and reliability: a team member copying data into ChatGPT, prompting it, and copying the output back into a system is real value, and it's also manual, unrepeatable at scale, and dependent on that specific person remembering to do it correctly every time. A purpose-built workflow runs the same logic automatically, consistently, against every record, without depending on human memory or diligence.

The useful response to this objection isn't to argue that ChatGPT is inadequate, it usually isn't, for the narrow task someone's already using it for. It's to point at the gap between an individual using a general tool occasionally and a process running reliably at the volume the business actually needs, which is where the purpose-built system earns its cost.

Sometimes the objection is right, and the honest answer is that a general tool already solves the problem well enough that a custom build isn't worth it. But conflating "a general tool can do this task once" with "we don't need a system that does this task automatically, every time" kills projects that would have actually paid for themselves.
